Every year the IRS releases a data book summarizing its activities for the year. The 2007 IRS Data Book, which covers the period from 10/1/06 to 9/30/07, was released today. Some interesting numbers:
- $2.4 trillion - the approximate amount the IRS collected
- 235 million - the number of returns the IRS processed
- 114 million - the number of individuals receiving tax refunds
- $248.6 billion - total refunds individuals received
- 40 cents - the amount the IRS spent to collect $100 of tax revenue (the lowest ever)
- 1.4 million - the number of individual returns examined by the IRS
- 33.2 million - the number of toll free calls received by the IRS
- 215 million - the number of visits on the IRS web site
